How to deal with common illnesses

While we are always happy to see you in the walk in clinic, it does get very busy and you can have a long wait particularly during the coughs and colds season.

NHS: Health A to Z has lots of advice on common conditions, so do have a look before coming to the walk in clinic. You could save yourself some time!

The community pharmacists are trained and are very well placed to give advice about many common conditions, so make them your first port of call if you need advice. The campus pharmacy can also see you for emergency contraception and this service is free for under 25’s.

‘Freshers flu’ will soon be in full swing so here are some useful tips for what to do for yourself and when we think it is important that you come to see us.

Remember that most coughs, colds and sore throats are self-limiting conditions caused by viruses. Antibiotics will not make any difference. It is vital that we keep antibiotics for more serious infections. Increased resistance to these drugs means that we are running out of effective antibiotics.

Make sure you always have a supply of paracetamol or ibuprofen to hand, which you can start taking if you develop the aches and pains associated with colds and flu. They will reduce your temperature and make you feel a bit better.
