ADHD Referral

Please complete all the questions below. These are needed before your GP can refer you to your chosen assessment clinic, who will carry out a thorough assessment.

We will contact you if we require more information, or let you know if we have completed a referral to your chosen assessment clinic. If you have not heard from us in the next two weeks, please contact us through the practice website.

The waiting times are particularly long for the NHS neurodevelopmental clinic. You can read more about this, including details of the assessment process, waiting times and information about additional support on the Sussex Partnership NHS website.

We have the option of referring you to one of the NHS funded “Right to Choose” providers, based in different parts of the country, who offer remote assessments and treatment. The number of these “Right to choose” NHS funded providers are growing and may not offer the same services the NHS neurodevelopmental clinic.

For your GP to engage with the provider, we would expect them to undertake the physical diagnostics in your assessment, initiate your medication (if appropriate) and also provide you with a medication review annually. This should be considered when you are considering your choice of provider – please refer to the list of providers: NHS Right to Choose: for autism and ADHD – Sussex Health & Care

If you are still confused about what your preferred “Right to Choose” provider offer, please contact them directly. We are aware that, at short notice, some of these providers change what they offer.

You may also choose to fund the assessment and treatment privately.

Important – Any examination or tests required for a diagnosis of, or prescribing for ADHD, will need to be carried out by the specialist clinics.

If ADHD is diagnosed, and if medication is indicated, it will be the responsibility of your chosen specialist to initiate, prescribe and monitor the medication initially (at the least for 3 months) and not in general practice.

This will include private clinics and you should ensure that you can afford initial prescription charges and on-going private consultations during the length of your treatment- this will include mandatory annual reviews.

Please check that your specialist can offer all aspects of prescribing and relevant monitoring before requesting a referral.
